About Vegetable Oil
Vegetable oil is a type of edible oil extracted from plant sources such as soybeans, sunflower seeds, corn, canola, coconut, and cottonseed. It is commonly used in cooking, frying, baking, and food processing due to its neutral taste, high smoke point, and nutritional properties. As a widely used ingredient in both household and industrial kitchens, vegetable oil is valued for its versatility, long shelf life, and health-friendly fat composition.
The production of vegetable oil typically begins by crushing or pressing the oil-bearing plant material to release the oil. In most cases, the crushed raw material is then treated with hexane, a solvent that helps extract additional oil from the pulp. After separation, the remaining solids are repurposed as animal feed, while the crude oil is sent for refining.
To ensure safety, quality, and purity, crude vegetable oil undergoes a process known as RBD — Refining, Bleaching, and Deodorizing:
Refining: The oil is treated with phosphoric acid and caustic soda to remove gums, free fatty acids, and impurities.
Bleaching: Heated and mixed with filter aids like clay or diatomaceous earth to absorb unwanted color and contaminants.
Deodorizing: The oil is heated under vacuum and steamed to eliminate odors and residual impurities.
This RBD process results in a clear, odorless, and stable oil that is suitable for consumption and industrial use.
